The End of Time Disappears From Amazon

I have had many strange things happen to my books on Amazon.com, including hostile reviews written by Amazon itself. But the disappearance of the actual page on which The End of Time appears is definitely a first. I have no idea whether the removal is the result of political sabotage or not. I had actually thought that since The End of Time is a work that is both philosophical and a memoir, the usual boycott would not be so visibly in force.

On the one hand, I knew I would still not get reviewed in The New Republic. The book editor Leon Wieseltier is an intelligent writer but an extremely petty individual who has held a 20-year grudge against my publisher at Encounter, Peter Collier, and myself for being indiscreet enough to have described a hypocrisy of the late Susan Sontag. In retaliation, Wieseltier has not only banned me and reviews of my books from the pages of The New Republic, but he has refused to review a single book published by Encounter since its inception, which includes more than a hundred titles.

Nonetheless, I did think there would be reviews of The End of Time in some of the mainstream press from which my books have pretty much been banished since I left the political left. I thought this in part because the book has been so highly praised by individuals who do not share my politics. Walter Isaacson, former editor of TIME and former head of CNN, for example, had this to say about The End of Time:

"A powerful book. This is a poignant rumination on the meaning of life and the meaning of death. Horowitz faces his intimations of mortality with both emotional and intellectual depth. He has captured it all beautifully."
– Walter Isaacson
Although The End of Time has only been in the bookstores for a couple of weeks, so far there have been no reviews, and this does not augur well since book reviews are usually done in a timely fashion. And then someone is already removing it from the shelves.
