British Academic Jihad Collapsing?
The British anti-Jewish lobby of pseudo-academics inside the Association of University Teachers may be about to suffer a major setback. There are reports on Israel radio and elsewhere in the media that the AUT is about to reverse itself and cancel the boycott of two Israeli universities that the AUT's Hamas wing had managed to push through a few weeks back. We look forward to seeing these jihadniks goosestepping away with their tails between their legs.
In recent days the faculties of Oxford, Warwick and Sussex universities faculty rejected the boycott of Haifa and Bar Ilan universities, which had been called for by Britain's Association of University Teachers. The New York Academy of Sciences denounced the AUT and said that its resolution, "by selecting individuals and universities for boycott, is a very clear reminder of 'McCarthy-like' tactics of accusation... We call upon the AUT to take immediate steps to rescind their regressive vote and join forward-looking academics the world over in voting for cooperation and not boycott."
Dr. Emanuele Ottolenghi, a world class researcher at the Middle East Center at St. Anthony's College at Oxford University, has written to AUT general-secretary requesting to be included in the boycott's proposed blacklist. "Oaths of political loyalty do not belong to academia. They belong to illiberal minds and repressive regimes," wrote Ottolenghi. One of the Israeli universities involved is threatening to file suit against the British AUT. British intellectuals are increasingly willing to denounce the boycott campaign as anti-Semitic. The notoriously anti-Israel School of Oriental and African Studies in London, which has been a major player in th eBash-the-Jews movement in Britain, may soon be facing legal penalties for its anti-Semitism.

I find it odd that Universities allow known Communists to speak under accademic freedom. Then they turn around and deny that freedom to Israelis.
It does not surprise me, when is the last time a Lib anti-Semetic boycott worked

Mr Weinert V - you are right!
Vis-a-vis "civilized British academics" - a start - a tiny start - still not enough and not fast enough! And go further - with your "intellect" - by telling the truth about world wide "islamojihadifacism". If you don't - you are one with the enemy of the Western Civilization!
PCKills! "PC" - taking away Your Inalienable Rights to Self Defense; Turning You into the victims - ready to be PC victimized; Bringing You world wide islamofacisim!; Preparing You for dhimmitude! WAKE UP - Refuse PC Victimhood! Use your Inalienable rights to Stand Up and Fight the islamofacists - whereever they are hiding!!
Okay, so we have a story about the anti-Semites in the "Association of University Teachers", a British group of far leftist academics. And the point of the article is that their "boycott" of... well, Jews basically, was denounced by Oxford, Warwick, and Sussex universities, the New York Academy of Sciences, Dr. Emanuele Ottolenghi, and a number of British intellectuals. Not to mention a number of us American academics. Personally, I don't know anyone on my department's faculty that supports, or would support, such Jew-bashing tripe.
In fact, my own email to the AUT read as follows:
"As an American academic, I would like to be added to your boycott of Bar-Ilan University for the following reasons:
1) I am American and no doubt "implicated" with Israel by the sort of reductive logic that would boycott an entire faculty for the policies of their government,
2) I support the right of academics to teach whatever, wherever, and whenever they so choose, which clearly puts me at odds with the AUT,
3) I am more than a bit repulsed to see McCarthyist tactics being used by fellow academics and progressives.
Thanks,
-Carlton Hickok"
So, could one of you just acknowledge the fact that quite a few of us dirty libs actually support Israel and oppose these anti-Semitic "boycotts"? I agree wholeheartedly that these crackpots NEED to be opposed by those of us on the left, but how about some credit when we do take a stand against them?
Carlton...good point and good start. Your example may go unnoticed - because it could be - the exception...? The more vocal/shrill/extreme of your following seem to drown out moderation - of any sort.
Just keep going further - as you're on the right path (no pun) -maybe allow more discussion about what the left "progressives" et al ignore and worse - promote (tacitly or not) and particpate in...
One of many examples (new as of 16 May 2005) of "progressive action":
"Maoist rebels kidnap 500 Nepalese children from classes in village schools".
I prefer the "horrors" of a "mcarthy witch hunt"(with its 6 Hollywood "victims" and "forced" loyalty oaths) any day to any leftist round ups/gulags/re-education camps/etc. (any one -over the past 100 years and continuing).
