Taking on the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy
Speaking of a Left Wing Conspiracy, National Review Online today runs an interesting interview with Byron York, author of the soon-to-be-released book, The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy: The Untold Story of How Democratic Operatives, Eccentric Billionaires, Liberal Activists, and Assorted Celebrities Tried to Bring Down a President--and Why They'll Try Even Harder Next Time. (If readers will forgive the unseemly self-promotion, a review of Mr. York's achievement by yours truly appears in today’s Wall Street Journal.)
Conservatives would do well to heed the lessons of York’s book, a detailed chronicle of the Left’s ill-starred campaign to defeat President Bush in the latest election. Particular attention should be paid to the rise of tax-free liberal fundraising arms, the so-called 527s. Violating with impunity the same campaign finance laws they urged upon the country several years ago, these groups—in classic liberal fashion—aim to spend their way to success. If the mission of the angry Left is to vilify their political opponents, the network of liberal fundraising groups is determined to put their money where the (angry Left’s) mouth is.
As their ascent continues, stay tuned to Discover the Network knock them down a rung. Or two.

These new organizations (527s et al) and methods make the left more efficient at what they have been doing successfully for decades: placement of sympathizers at all points of the professional compass.
I predict the Democrats won't get the Presidency in 2008, nor gains in the Senate or House along the way, but it won't matter. Sure they'll spend a lot of money and energy on hopeless electoral goals, but even they will be surprised how much they can get their own way by cash and consolidated influence.
You don't really need the democratic rule on your side, or even the rule of law itself, when you've got concerted action in governmental bureaucracies and especially in non-governmental entities.
