"LEFTWING SYNDICATE"
Tom DeLay Names the Enemy
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay must be reading DiscovertheNetworks.org. In an interview with Fox News' Tony Snow Radio Show yesterday, he revealed an unusually clear understanding of the organizational linkage binding the Democratic Party, the mainstream media and the private "Shadow Party" of George Soros into a tightly coordinated political machine — a "leftwing syndicate," in DeLay's words.
The Republican leader accuses this "leftwing syndicate" of orchestrating the current smear campaign against him. DeLay told Fox News:
"I'm suggesting there's a leftwing syndicate. That's for sure, we've documented it. These people are all hooked up. The same people that went after George W. Bush have just changed their focus onto me. They are running ads, they are raising money. This is pretty serious stuff. …For more details on the shadowy network that DeLay calls a "leftwing syndicate," see, "Soros Shadow Party Stalks DeLay" (FrontPage, April 12, 2005).
"Democrats are trying to waylay us and the liberal media is playing their game. We've got a bunch of 527s out there funded by George Soros and heavy hitters hooked up with these do-gooder groups like Democracy 21, Common Cause, and they have got this strategy. They announced it, I mean it's publicized that they have this strategy and they are trying to carry it out. You talk about judicial activism, we now have journalistic activism. A legitimate paper, The New York Times, is shopping an op-ed piece calling for my resignation amongst Republicans. It shows you what's going on here."
UPDATE 04.21.05: Evidently DeLay has used the term "syndicate" before to describe the alignment of political forces opposing him. The New York Times of March 22, 2005 quotes from a March 18 speech that Congressman DeLay gave before a conference of the Family Research Council:
"Mr. DeLay complained that `the other side' had figured out how `to defeat the conservative movement,' by waging personal attacks, linking with liberal organizations and persuading the national news media to report the story. He charged that `the whole syndicate' was `a huge nationwide concerted effort to destroy everything we believe in.'"Well, he got that right. (via Oliver Willis)

Hey Tom DeLay,
I know you're busy and all wondering what your professional reputation has to do with the Democrats' lack of any Social Security reform proposals, but you yourself said Judge George W. Greer of Florida's 6th Circuit Court would be prosecuted for contempt of Congress.
I know you didn't say when, but could you make it a little closer to now than never?
Tom Delay names the Enemy -- decades late. I don't want to be negative, but consider this quote: " . . . we now have journalistic activism. A legitimate paper, The New York Times, is shopping an op-ed piece calling for my resignation amongst Republicans. It shows you what's going on here." Excuse me, but did this guy just phone in from Mars? Sorry Tom, but where have you been? Where have the Republicans been? It's this kind of outrageous naivite, not super-conspiracies, that is going to lead to the death of the Republic. I don't want to be negative or cynical, but folks, this stuff should make grown men cry.
Walter Duranty, New York Times, 7 decades ago. The duplicity ain't new. Wake up, Tom!
