Half-Baked Tyranny at Northeastern Illinois U

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education reports that Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) has warned the members of the College Republicans that both the students and the group will be punished if they hold a campus protest against affirmative action. The NEIU College Republicans canceled its planned "affirmative action bake sale" protest after NEIU's dean of students warned them in an e-mail that to hold such a sale would violate NEIU's "nondiscrimination" policy and expose the students to punishment. NEIU, which allowed a feminist group to hold a similar "pay equity bake sale" protest on campus, is the latest in a string of schools nationwide that have attempted to shut down these protests against affirmative action.

"You would think that universities would have learned that affirmative action bake sales are constitutionally protected," remarked David French, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which has twice written to NEIU on behalf of the College Republicans. "In this case, NEIU's disregard for its students' FirstAmendment freedom of expression is made all the more severe by the university's apparent double standards."

only to find the neighborhood changed, in this case, NOT for the better.

As one of the few Jewish conservatives in my area - it saddens me that an institution that has it's foundations in training teachers to teach students, now fears the free expression of political ideas, and has to suppress the rights of those that are not politically correct. Any chance you can put me in touch wit the College republicans - I have some small organizational and computer talents that might be of service.

Administration inner thinking:
"Can't let them get the minorities riled up or those stupid savages might get violent and we might lose our pc street creds"

It is fascinating to watch the virtuosic mental gymnastics performed by those who celebrate Ward Churchill's academic freedom to make outrageously harsh political statements, deeply insulting to the families of those killed on 9/11, while simultaneously approving of campus speech codes restricting these affirmative action protests whose message could hardly be milder.

My cousin, a non-partisan university professor at a major left-wing institution, is ashamed of what the education industry has wrought. She feels unable to speak out about the situation, due to the oppressive climate of forced leftist conformity. She actually fears reprisal if she speaks her mind, even in the informal venue of a faculty lounge, so she remains mute.

This is a very sad state of affairs on a campus supposedly devoted to the free exchange of ideas.
