A self-described "peace activist," Bill Scheurer is the Director of Peace Majority (and Editor of Peace Majority Report). In addition, he was in initiator (along with  Kevin Zeese, Dick Mazess, and Linda Schade) of Voters For Peace; he is a member of Military Families Speak Out; and he is a leader of the Lindenhurst, Illinois-based group Congress for Peace, which is part of the United for Peace and Justice anti-war coalition.

Scheurer was also an "independent" candidate for U.S. Congress in the Illinois 8th District in 2006. His platform called for the immediate withdrawal of American troops from the Iraq War, which had “undermined our national security and influence in the world, all while eroding our constitutional liberties here at home”; charged that the Republican and Democratic parties are agents of "large corporations" and unnamed "related individuals"; denounced “[t]he ‘Enron/Halliburton’ energy bill ... that gives ... oil companies billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, while they rake in hundreds of billions in record-breaking profits …”; pledged to oppose "an imbalanced budget … [n]o matter which party is in power”; proposed to fix America’s “serious national crisis in our healthcare system” by means of “a plan of mandatory health insurance (like we have for auto insurance), based on the idea of ‘universal coverage, universal responsibility’”; and impugned President Bush for having implemented “[u]nwise, unfair trade agreements and uncontrolled immigration, for the sole purpose of forcing the American worker to compete with four billion people living in poverty throughout the world.”
