AXIS SALLY Printer Friendly Page

“Axis Sally” (1900-1988) was born Mildred Elizabeth Sisk in Portland, Maine and, as a young girl, took the surname Gillars when her mother remarried. At age 35, Gillars found employment as an English instructor in Germany and later worked as an announcer and actress with Radio Berlin. During WWII, U.S. troops dubbed her “Axis Sally” because of her Nazi propaganda broadcasts in which she introduced herself as “Midge at the mike.” After the war, Gillars was captured and transported to the United States, where she was tried for eight counts of treason. Convicted on one of those counts, she spent 12 years behind bars before being paroled in 1961.
