Abu Abdallah al-Shafi’i (a.k.a. Warba Holiri al-Kurdi) is the co-founder and leader of Ansar al-Islam (Supporters of Islam), a radical Kurdish Islamic group that was supportive of Saddam Hussein’s regime. Located in northern Iraq, this organization has ties to the Taliban and al Qaeda, and has called for attacks against Americans. Al-Shafi’i took over the leadership of the group in June 2004, after co-founder Mullah Krekar was put under house arrest in Norway. Al-Shafi’i was trained in the use of arms in al-Qaeda bases, and participated in battles against Russians in Chechnya.
