Mara Verheyden-Hillard is a co-founder of The Partnership for Civil Justice Legal Defense & Education Fund (PCJ-LDEF), which is a sub-unit of the International Action Center, which is a front for the Workers World Party, a Marxist-Leninist "vanguard" which aligns with North Korea. The PCJ-LDEF lawyers also work closely with the pro-Communist National Lawyers Guild. Dedicated to hampering the efforts of law-enforcement officials to investigate terrorist suspects, the PCJ-LDEF has produced a publication entitled "Know Your Rights If The Police Stop You or Come to Your Home," and another titled, "Know Your Rights When the Government, FBI, or INS Calls On You," which is available in English, Arabic, and Farsi.
An attorney for the International Action Center, Verheyden-Hillard was on the legal team composed of PCJ and National Lawyers Guild members that sued Philadelphia officials for having sometimes "use[d] city regulations to dissuade members of controversial political groups and causes from holding public demonstrations." The lawsuit was originally filed on behalf of organizers who were denied a permit to hold a two-day vigil in support of convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal at Philadelphia's City Hall.
A strong supporter of the anti-war movement, Verheyden-Hillard has been a guest speaker at numerous peace rallies around the country, and counseled against a military response to the 9/11 attacks.
