Malia – Collective of Italian American Women (CIAW)

Overview

* Feminist organization with operations in U.S., Canada, and Italy
* Endorses Palestine Solidarity Movement and International Solidarity Movement

Based in the New York metropolitan area, Malia – Collective of Italian American Women describes itself as “a feminist collective celebrating the creative work of women.” Active in the United States, Canada, and Italy, it sponsors such events as poetry readings, lectures, and film festivals with feminist themes. It avidly supported the April 25, 2004 “March for Women’s Lives” held in Washington, D.C., a rally that advocated unrestricted access to taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand.

Malia’s interests extend beyond the realm of feminist issues. In November 2003, for instance, the group endorsed the Third Annual Conference of the Palestine Solidarity Movement, which is the collegiate arm of the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Hamas organization that supports Palestinian suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians. Fellow Conference endorsers included ActionLA; Al-Awda; Al-Bireh; the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee; Americans for Justice in Palestine-Israel; Amnesty International; Code Pink for Peace; the Committee for Justice in Palestine; Duke Divest; Jews Against the Occupation; Left Turn; MADRE; the Middle East Children’s Alliance; the Muslim Students’ Association; the Palestinian Environmental NGO’s Network Support Group; Students for Justice in Palestine; and SUSTAIN.
