Established in 1984 and incorporated in 1992, the Heinz Family Foundation (HFF) is one of three affiliated foundations in the circle known as the Heinz Family Philanthropies (HFP), whose Chairman is Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of John Kerry. (The other two HFP member charities are the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation, and the H. John Heinz III Foundation; these are both funds within the Heinz Family Foundation, fed by private trusts belonging to, and controlled by, Teresa Heinz Kerry.) The Executive Director of HFF is Jeffrey R. Lewis, an attorney who received his J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School in 1989; he earns a salary and benefits package worth more than $230,000 per year for his work with HFF.

A  major financier of radical environmentalist groups, the Heinz Family Foundation identifies its additional fields of interest as: Arts; Education; Museums; Human Health and Aging; Women’s Economic Opportunities; and Cultural and Societal Enrichment. "To fuel progress,” says HFF, “we concentrate a significant portion of our energies on educating the people who influence social policy in these areas. In particular, we focus on those who write the laws and cast legislation-creating votes."

The Capital Research Center, which was established in 1984 to study nonprofit organizations and to rate them along an ideological spectrum, classifies the Heinz Family Foundation as “radical left.”

HFF is best known for its sponsorship and administration of the annual Heinz Awards, which were created in 1993 to honor the late Senator John Heinz. These Awards recognize “outstanding achievement” in the areas of: Arts and Humanities; Environment; Human Condition; Public Policy; and Technology, the Economy and Employment. Winners receive a $250,000 prize.

Among the many groups funded by the Heinz Family Foundation are: the Brookings Institution; Earth Action Network; the Earth Island Institute; the Environmental Defense Fund; the Environmental Media Association; the Feminist Majority Foundation; Global Exchange; the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund; the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition; the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund; the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Legal Defense and Education Fund; the Natural Resources Defense Council; the Nature Conservancy; Oxfam America; Physicians for Social Responsibility; the Tides Foundation and the Tides Center; the Union of Concerned Scientists; Women's Policy. and the World Resources Network.
