Peace and Security Funders Group's Visual Map

  • Unincorporated association of philanthropic individuals and charities that fund leftwing, anti-war, and environmentalist causes
  • Members include the Ford Foundation; the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; the Open Society Institute; and Working Assets

Founded in 1999, the Peace and Security Funders Group (PSFG) is an unincorporated association of individual philanthropists, private foundations, public foundations, operation foundations, charitable trusts, and other grantmaking programs that give money to leftwing anti-war and environmentalist causes. PSFG is a project of the Ploughshares Fund, which has made many grants to such leftwing groups as the Natural Resources Defense Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility, the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth, the Environmental Defense Group, the Advocacy Institute, Greenpeace, the Tides Center and the Tides Foundation.

The PSFG steering committee consists of members from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Ploughshares Fund, the United Nations Foundation, the Rockefeller Family Fund, the Stanley Foundation, the Colombe and CarEth Foundations, and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Concerned that weapons testing harms the environment and human health, PSFG’s goal is to rid the world of all nuclear and many conventional weapons. PSFG complains that the U.S. government spends far too much money on the military and, conversely, much too little on social programs. PSFG targets its funding toward groups that seek to address the “root causes” of war and violence – causes which it characterizes as: competition for natural resources, ethnic and religious differences, poverty, and “social injustices.” Much funding is also earmarked for groups that work to promote conflict-resolution on both a small scale (in families and communities) and a large scale (between nations). Many PSFG funders make grants to groups that oppose the Patriot Act, the “overreach of intelligence agencies,” the development of a missile defense system, space weapons, and weapons of mass destruction. Some seek to limit, destroy, or ban conventional weapons, small arms, and landmines as well.

Among PSFG’s leftwing members are: the Agape Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation, the Colombe Foundation, the Compton Foundation, the Flora Family Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Global Resource Action Center for the Environment, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Stewart Mott Charitable Trust, the Open Society Institute, the Peace Development Fund, the Public Welfare Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the Shefa Fund, the Turner Foundation, the United Nations Foundation, and Working Assets.
