The Steiner-King Foundation (SKF) received tax-exempt status in 1995. John Steiner and his wife, Margo King, serve as trustees of this foundation.

Mr. Steiner, a 1965 graduate of Harvard University, also works with the Mediators Foundation (MF), an organization whose mission is "to foster global leadership for a peaceful, just and sustainable world by identifying, supporting and connecting visionary leaders working in the best interests of our small planet." MF describes Steiner as "a networker, catalyst, creative consultant, occasional philanthropist and venture capital investor." In addition, Steiner has served as a co-founder of the National Commons (a predecessor to the United States Consensus Council); a founding board member of Search for Common Ground; a founding member and early leader of the Threshold Foundation; a founding member of the Social Venture Network; a board chairman of the Center for Dispute Resolution (a.k.a. CDR Associates); the acting board chairman of Reuniting America; and a collaborator with Dr. Robert Fuller in the DIGNITY Movement. Steiner also has given financial support to ActBlue, which raises funds for Democratic Party candidates.

Ms. King, for her part, says that she and her husband "work in the many worlds of environmental, social, political, economic and spiritual activism." "A sample of projects we have helped initiate and/or support," King adds, "are [the] Threshold Foundation, the Integral Institute, the global e-Parliament and Climate Parliament, the Abraham Path in the Middle East, [the] Mediators Foundation, Wisdom Beyond Borders, [the] Social Venture Network, Creative Philanthropy, Hub Boulder, Impact Partners, Gamechanger Films, Transpartisan political field building, [and] Evolutionary Leaders."

One of the more noteworthy organizations supported by SKF is the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, which maintains that “human activities since the Industrial Revolution have increased the rate and magnitude” of “global warming” and currently pose “the single greatest threat facing civilization as we know it.” Other SKF grantees include the ACORN Institute, Democracy Now!, the Earth Action Network, the Earth Island Institute, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Environmental Defense, Free Speech TV, the Humane Society of the United States, Mercy Corps, the Midwest Academy, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Nature Conservancy, Nonviolent Peaceforce, Oxfam America, the Peace Development Fund, Planned Parenthood, the Rainforest Action Network, the Threshold Foundation, the Tides Center, the Tides Foundation, the US Fund for UNICEF, the WAND Education Fund, the Wilderness Society, Wildlife Conservation, the William J. Clinton Presidential Foundation, World Vision, and the World Wildlife Fund

SKF is a member of the Peace and Security Funders Group, an association of foundations, charitable trusts, , and individual philanthropists who “make grants or expenditures that contribute to peace and global security.”
