Established in 1991, the Summit Charitable Foundation (SCF) has three main areas of philanthropic interest -- the environment, abortion rights, and youth activism. In the environmental realm, the Foundation's largest funding is reserved for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Summit Foundation Chairman Roger Sant is also a Director and the former Chairman of WWF.

Two programs in particular dominate SCF grant-making:

1) Conservation of the Mesoamerican Reef: "The Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion contains the largest coral reef system in the Atlantic Ocean. … This biologically rich and threatened ecoregion encompasses barrier, fringe, patch, and atoll coral reefs, along with coastal mangroves, lagoons and seagrass beds. … The Summit Foundation has been supporting conservation efforts in this ecoregion since 1998. … Accordingly, our grantmaking addresses both land-based and marine issues that threaten the integrity and health of the Reef."

2) Global Population & Youth Leadership: This program advocates universal access to taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand. "At this unprecedented time in history," says the SCF website, "half of the world's population is under 25 years of age. This means that the largest generation of young people ever - over three billion strong -- is entering or will soon enter their reproductive years. Young people, particularly those who live in the developing world, suffer disproportionately from early and unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortion, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. We know that these outcomes come with high emotional, social and economic costs that can significantly impact their lives and ultimately influence global development. ... We seek to create a cadre of outstanding young professionals committed to improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Quintana Roo, Mexico."

Also ranking high on the list of SCF funding priorities are organizations that embrace radical feminism, multiculturalism (whose premise is that Western culture is no better than, and in many ways inferior to, its non-Western counterparts), and gay/transgender rights. While the Foundation supports free condom distribution, one of its Web pages ridicules public funding for abstinence programs, on grounds that "there is no scientific evidence that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs -- those that censor information about contraception -- are effective."

Among SCF's many grantees are the following: the Tides Foundation; the Tides Center; the Union of Concerned Scientists; the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy; Catholics for a Free Choice; the International Women's Leadership Forum; the Earth Policy Institute; the World Wildlife Fund-Conservation Foundation; the Global Fund for Women; the International Planned Parenthood Federation; the Public Health Institute; the International Sustainable Development Foundation for China; the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL); the Women's Institute for Leadership Development for Human Rights; Family Care International; the Natural Resources Defense Council; the Sierra Club; Conservation International; the Earth Day Network; Friends of the Earth; the Environmental Defense Fund; the Communications Consortium Media Center; the Rainforest Alliance; Population Action International; the Nature ConservancyPopulation Connection; the World Resources Institute; Zero Population Growth; the Better World Fund; the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide; the Wildlife Conservation Society; the World Population Foundation; the Center for International Environmental Law; the Alan Guttmacher Institute; the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States; the Swedish Association for Sex Education; Advocates for Youth; and the Center for Health and Gender Equity.
