Contents of Some Speeches Made at ACS Events

In a July 23, 2002 speech to ACS, Hillary Clinton accused the Rehnquist Supreme Court of "installing an American President" in defiance of state law and the people's will. In another ACS speech, on August 1, 2003, Mrs. Clinton railed against "the court that gave us Bush v. Gore, which made a mockery of one of our most cherished Constitutional rights, the right to vote," and charged that the U.S. Supreme Court had lost the people's trust.

Touching on what is one of ACS's oft-repeated themes, Judge Guido Calabresi of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan compared President Bush to both Hitler and Mussolini in a single breath. Calabresi stated at an ACS convention on June 20, 2004: "[S]omebody came to power as a result of the illegitimate acts of a legitimate institution that had the right to put somebody in power. That is what the Supreme Court did in Bush versus Gore. It put somebody in power. The reason I emphasize that is because that is exactly what happened when Mussolini was put in by the king of Italy. … That is what happened when Hindenburg put Hitler in." Nothing less than a "structural  reassertion of democracy" could set America right again, Calabresi intoned. It is toward that end that the American Constitution Society devotes its efforts.
