Ramsey Clark: Profile

By Stand4Facts.org

When Ramsey Clark comes to your campus, be prepared for a dignified speaker who once served in the highest reaches of government. Appointed US Attorney General under President Lyndon Johnson, he still has the gravitas and slow, deliberate style of a dignitary. Don’t be fooled by it.

Clark made an extreme, radically left turn after his term in office. He came to relentlessly condemn America as the world’s Great Satan whose power has run amok and to passionately defend anti-Americans and alleged war criminals. He formed his own activist organization, the International Action Committee (IAC)[1] which pushes the agenda of the Workers World Party, “a radical Socialist group with roots in the Stalin-era Soviet Union“[2] that “hails the totalitarian regime in North Korea.”[3] A former colleague described him as “a good man gone ga-ga-at least twenty-five years ago.”[4] While some on the political left distance themselves from his extremism, others revere him.[5] With his expertise and credentials, he has become an unimpeachable source for strengthening the views of various leftist groups.

Mr. Clark does not usually come to campuses to lecture on the Israeli-Arab conflict. Instead, he speaks at various leftist symposiums and rallies put on by organizations such as A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now To Stop War and End Racism), which he helped found and he generally focuses on indictments of America. He also speaks about the clients he has chosen to defend, including Sheik Omar Abd El-Rahman, Charles Taylor, Lyndon LaRouche, Slobodan Milosevic, Rwandagenocide indictee Pastor Elizaphan Ntakirutimana and most recently, Saddam Hussein. Slate Magazine called him “The War Criminal’s Best Friend.”[6]

Though Clark does not focus on Israel, the IAC website has virulently anti-Israel screeds, including the usual claims that Israel is illegitimate, colonialist, imperialist, evil and has no right to exist.[7] The organization Clark co-founded (ANSWER) forms coalitions with groups that are virulently anti-Israel. ANSWER, for example, denounces Israel, opposes the Road Map and even the much more liberal Geneva Accords3, and demands divestment, an end to US aid to Israel, the right of return and a one state solution-that is, the end of a Jewish state.

Given that Clark works with the most active anti-Israel group on American campuses, including Al-Awda (Right of Return Coalition), Muslim Student Association of the U.S./Canada, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and the campus Palestine Solidarity organizations, it is not surprising that you will be likely to hear some of the following claims made in his dignified, lawerly way:

*"In Israel, 90 percent of the terrorism can be attributed to the government; preventing people from work, school, bulldozing their homes, torturing, living under curfew.”[8]

*“If you watch what our government does rather than listen to what it says… you’d see for 50 years our acts have led to the erosion of dignity and sovereignty and independence for the Palestinian people and for the region. We want to do that, and we want the American people to not only accept it, but applaud it.”[9]

*"In any American newspaper, you will find that the terrorism against the U.S. and Israel is treated identically and must be addressed in unison. Of course this is not the case. In the Israeli case, it is their presence in Palestine, and in the U.S. case it is caused by being in places it should not be."[10]

*“Our foreign policy has been a disaster…for a lot longer than we'd like to believe. We can look all the way back to the arrogance of the Monroe Doctrine [1823], when the United States said, "This hemisphere is ours," ignoring all the other people who lived here, too.”[11]

*“Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in virtually every town of the West Bank and Gaza and inside the 1948 borders of Israel in a heroic new uprising in response to Israeli terror.” December 22 2004 on IAC website[12]

*“A video segment showing the murder of a Palestinian mother by Israeli soldiers, before her husband and weeping children, has escaped Israeli military censorship and is doing the rounds on Israeli media…Watch the shocking video and draw your own conclusions.” IAC Website[13]
