On August 14, 2006, DU named “Terrormongers” – a reference to members of the Bush administration – to its “Top Ten” list: “Last week British and Pakistani authorities announced that they had foiled a major terrorist plot to blow up airliners over the Atlantic … Wow! It's only been five years since 9/11, but I feel so much safer already. Of course, the news that shady Islamists are still planning to harm American interests sent shockwaves of joy through the Republican party -- one by one they stepped forward to claim that it is only under their leadership that we can be fully safe from the terrorist threat.”
On July 17, 2006, DU stated: “Once upon a time, George W. Bush had a roadmap for peace in the Middle East. Then he invaded Iraq and forgot all about it. And now the people who could use that roadmap most of all are on the verge of driving over a cliff. … By the way, for those of you who are wondering why Bush is still in Europe rather than managing the crisis from the White House Situation Room, rest assured that he has the ability to be completely ineffective wherever he is in the world.”
On July 10, 2006, DU characterized Bush as “a president who allowed the greatest terrorist attack in history to happen on his watch, who completely fumbled the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, who started a war in Iraq that he couldn't finish, and who has allowed the situations in Iran and North Korea to get completely out of hand.” On that same date, the DU Top Ten list included talk show host Rush Limbaugh: “Questions continue to be raised about … Limbaugh's recent trip to the Dominican Republic. … Why was he carrying a bunch of boner pills [a reference to Viagra]? … [W]hy did he need a bunch of boner pills on a trip to the Dominican Republic with an all-male group of Hollywood producer types?”
On June 19, 2006, DU wrote: “Guess what -- there's a new outrage involving Ann Coulter! No, she hasn't insulted the 9/11 widows again -- this time she's advocating the assassination of Rep. John Murtha. Seriously. But you know what? Who gives a shit.”
On June 11, 2006, DU wrote: “Someone stick a fork in George W. Bush -- he's done. Last week Our Great Leader lent his support to the GOP's latest base-whipping exercise, the Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Because there's obviously nothing more important going on in the world right now than stopping gay people from entering into lifelong commitments to one another. Heck, if we allow gay people the freedom to marry, the terrorists who hate us for our freedoms will have won.” On that same date, DU assailed the Pentagon for allegedly authorizing the “humiliating and degrading treatment” of detainees at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. According to DU, the U.S. government “didn't really give a shit what the [Geneva Convention] guidelines said.”
