Same Old Ford

By Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

The Ford Foundation, in one respect, has not ventured far from its historical moorings.

Henry Ford, the legendary carmaker, thought there was an international cabal of Jewish financiers who promoted war and profited from it.

The $11.5 billion foundation long ago became independent of the Ford family but perhaps not old Hank's ideology.

Three years ago an angry dust-up in Congress occurred after lawmakers learned the foundation funded groups that branded Israel racist and called for an end of the Jewish state.

Under immense pressure from lawmakers -- including Sen. Rick Santorum -- Susan Berresford, foundation president then and now, conceded a lack of due diligence and promised not to underwrite groups that promote violence or bigotry or "challenge the very existence of legitimate, sovereign states like Israel."

She's not much of a promise-keeper.

NGO Monitor, run by former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold, reports the Ford Foundation still is channeling money to anti-Israeli groups -- such as the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

"Their activities are primarily political, and they exploit human rights rhetoric to delegitimize Israel, while undermining efforts toward a peaceful end to the (Palestinian-Israeli) conflict," NGO Monitor reports.

The Ford Foundation pledges to take action if necessary.

We feel a lot better now.
