Author and Leader of the Aztlan Movement to Speak at the University of California at Riverside By La Voz de Aztlan December 1, 2008 Dr. Armando Navarro, a University of California at Riverside professor of Ethnic Studies and a leader of the Aztlan Movement, will speak on the UCR campus concerning his new book, "The Immigration Crisis: Nativism, Armed Vigilantism, and the Rise of a Countervailing Movement ." He will speak on Thursday December 11. The 528-page book explains 400 years of the immigrant experience in the United States, with a heavy emphasis on the last decade. In the book, Dr. Navarro argues that the great economic expansion of the United States is based on the exploitation of immigrant labor. He cites Black slaves, Irish, Chinese, southern Europeans and, most recently, Mexicans and people from Latin America. Dr. Navarro is coordinator of the National Alliance for Human Rights (NAHR) and is author of a number of books. Among these is "Mexicano Political Experience in Occupied Aztlan: Struggles and Change" In recent years, he fought against a San Bernardino city initiative that would have made it illegal to hire or rent homes to undocumented immigrants, led 3,500 people on a march in Riverside in opposition to a federal immigration reform bill and led groups to face down border militias in Arizona. The lecture at UCR is meant to bring awareness to the immigration crisis, which Navarro hopes President-elect Barack Obama will address. The UCR lecture, where Navarro will also sign books, is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Humanities 1500 building. For further information call 951-743-7173. Dr. Navarro is also planning similar talks and book signings throughout Southern California -- including Perris, San Bernardino, Ontario and Coachella -- in late December and January. |
