Air America Radio (AAR) has the same chance of staying aloft as a jumbo jet powered by a lawnmower engine.

The Left’s answer to Conservative talk radio, which since its inception has been plagued by low ratings and a severe lack of talent, is now embroiled in a major financial scandal.

$875,000 in government funds that had been earmarked for the non-profit Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, an organization that caters to poor children in the South Bronx, were instead funneled to AAR through its former CEO, Evan Cohen, by Gloria Wise Executive Director Charles Rosen. At the time Cohen was also serving as a director of the Gloria Wise outfit.

AAR promises to return the money but a statement on its website says that it has no obligation to do so.

It appears that AAR might now be having trouble meeting its payroll. If it is, the odds of AAR returning the ill-gotten Gloria Wise money are slim to none.

This scandal has been brewing for 15 months. The MSM has, until recently, fastidiously refused to cover it which is understandable in light of the fact that it was leftist-loving MSM outlets, including the NY Times, that gave AAR massive positive press and tons of free publicity when its formation was announced in 2004.

Members of the blogosphere, most notably Brian Maloney and Michelle Malkin, are providing excellent coverage of the AAR scandal. Because of them, the MSM will soon be forced into covering the Air America mess.

The $875,000 given to Air America Radio had originally been earmarked to fund the Gloria Wise summer camp program, a program that is no longer operational due to a lack of funds. It’s ironic that AAR, whose broadcasts are peppered with rants on how greedy and uncaring for the poor the Right is, participated in a scheme that ultimately denied poor children the opportunity to trade the sweltering misery of the summertime South Bronx for two weeks of camp in a peaceful rural setting.

How’s that for social justice?
